Rudy Project Sterling Helmet - First Look

I just got in the new Rudy Project Sterling helmet for some testing, and it's a pretty sweet looking helmet. It has sort of a Dark Spiderman look to it! I had an earlier prototype, and I was looking forward to trying out the final version of the product. The Sterling is a very comfortable fitting helmet, and has an excellent adjustment system that uses a comfort ring along with their retention dial system called the RSR7. I really liked the RSR7, it pulled very evenly, and was easy to adjust, even with gloves on.


The helmet comes with a floating inner net (which they state is also a removable bug stop), which I found very comfortable to use as is, or it can be used with the accompanying extra pads instead. Either padding system attaches using small Velcro patches that are glued inside the helmet's shell. I did have an issue with a couple of the Velcro pads on the prototype becoming unglued, so I am hoping the final version doesn't give me that issue?


The Sterling helmet has a ton of ventilation holes, 18 to be exact, so it ventilates well and really helps cool your noggin. I enjoyed that during the last vestiges of warmer weather, and I was impressed how cool it kept me. Alas it is now winter, so the temperatures vary from warm, to cold and sometimes colder.

The Sterling also comes with a nice plush helmet bag, something that always seems to lack from most manufacturers!


I am looking forward to some thorough testing of the Sterling helmet. The time I spent using the prototype left an excellent impression with me. It was a comfortable helmet, with a great retention system, and the inner hanging net (aka the bug shield).

Hi - I've had the Rudy Project Sterling since February 2010. Whilst it's fantastically comfortable and awesome in looks (so many people stop me to comment on it), I've experienced a major failure with the clips on the side straps. They both disintegrated on their own... no unusual usage or movement; just "pop" and into a few broken pieces. Luckily this happened while I was just heading out. I'm currently working through a warranty claim

Yes, it has been a major issue for me, as I have broken 4 clips! 2 of them broke when I was replacing a previously broken one. A design flaw IMHO. Currently the helmet is sitting on the floor while I figure out what to do?

This is absolutely NOT representative of the high quality and craftsmanship (I can vouch for that) that Rudy Project prides itself on.

They are in the process of mailing reinforced replacement buckles (and installation instructions) to every single person who ordered one of these Sterling helmets. They are also completely replacing helmets of customers who are unable (or unwilling) to replace the buckles themselves.

Hi - Just a well over due update. I did get onto Rudy Project and they were most helpful by posting new clips (with a couple of extras) and full instructions (easy to follow). I've been enjoying riding with my helmet for the past 12 months, and I've even had a friend of mine purchase the same from my recommendation.
